Logroño, (EFE).- The Government Council of La Rioja approved this Wednesday the Decree approving the Wolf Management Plan (Canis lupus) in La Rioja and its coexistence with extensive livestock, as well as the Protocol for the extraction and capture of wolves in an exceptional and selective manner.
As explained by the Minister of Sustainability, Ecological Transition and Spokesperson, Álex Dorado Nájera, what was approved, in coordination with the agents involved, means “maintaining the ecological balance of our natural environment and at the same time preserving an essential activity in our region”. .
In turn, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural World, Territory and Population, Eva Hita, has expressed the importance of preserving the role of extensive livestock “because it is a key sector in our food, in our economy.”
The Decree is made up of four articles and two provisions that establish how this coexistence policy will be applied through two tools that include the two annexes to it:
- The Wolf Management Plan (Canis lupus) in La Rioja and its coexistence with extensive livestock farming, is annexed I.
- The Protocol for the extraction and capture of wolf specimens in La Rioja in an exceptional and selective way, is annex II
The primary objective of the Management Plan included in Annex I is to promote the coexistence between this species and extensive livestock farming in La Rioja.
To this end, a series of objectives are set with actions and indicators for a period of six years that will be reviewed every three years.
The second annex of the decree contains the Protocol for the extraction and capture of wolf specimens in La Rioja in an exceptional and selective manner, with the criteria required by the regulations for its application. EFE
