Alicante, (EFE).- The Local Police of Elche has arrested a 41-year-old woman, a drug addict, for abandoning her 14-month-old baby on the street of the Elche town, who tested positive for cocaine as a result of being breastfed by the mother.

Municipal sources have explained that the agents verified that the mother of the minor habitually left the baby without food or diapers to a woman with functional diversity, at the same time that they discovered that several people outside the family had stayed with the minor and had given him shelter to sleep out of pity “in view of the helpless situation” in which he found himself.
The events began on July 10, when the agents found the woman with functional diversity carrying a baby in her arms and, after speaking with her, learned about the child’s situation.
Hospital admission of the baby
After that, the agents transferred the baby to the pediatric unit of the Vinalopó hospital, where the minor’s aunt attended, who told the agents that the mother left the child with anyone in the neighborhood, that she was a cocaine user and that the baby was fed with cakes and sugary juices.
During the investigations, according to these same sources, the baby’s mother appeared at the hospital, who tested positive for cocaine after undergoing a voluntary screening test.
More information was also collected about the situation of her other children, three of whom were of legal age, while her other younger son was in good condition under the care of one of the mother’s brothers.
Positive for cocaine and pneumonia
After the interview with the pediatrician, he reported that the minor had tested positive for cocaine, in addition to having the beginning of pneumonia, for which he was admitted to the care of the grandmother, while the woman was arrested and transferred to police stations and what happened was reported to the Prosecutor’s Office.
