Madrid (EFE).- The Ombudsman has initiated an ex officio action to request information about the shipwreck of a pneumatic boat that was heading to the Canary Islands in which two immigrants died and another 34 disappeared.
As explained by the institution, the action is carried out both before the Canary Islands Regional Coordination Center of the Coordination Authority Against Irregular Immigration, as well as before the Maritime Rescue and Safety Society (SASEMAR).
The Ombudsman requests information on the coordination measures adopted in this regard and the actions carried out during the rescue operation of that pneumatic, in which 60 people were traveling, which was assumed by Morocco, although it was not carried out until after 10 hours of its location, despite the fact that Spain had a Maritime Rescue ship in another operation just an hour away.
CC will request that the Government appear in Congress
Canary Coalition has announced that it will request the appearance of the Government before the Permanent Delegation of Congress, to explain what happened.
The nationalist formation wants the details of the rescue of that pneumatics to be explained and will request that the Ministers of Development, Defense, Interior and Foreign Affairs give explanations “so that the truth is known and responsibilities are assumed”, said the member of the Executive of the nationalist formation Ana Oramas.
In his opinion, CC’s petition will be supported by other political groups such as PP, Bildu, Esquerra Republicana, Unidas Podemos and others, who have shown their opposition to the government’s policy on Morocco.
These supports will allow a majority that will force the Government to appear before the Permanent Deputation of Congress, Oramas has ventured.
Minister Belarra asks Maritime Rescue to “let work” in the rescue of migrants
In San Sebastián, the Minister for Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda, Ione Belarra, has demanded that “Salvamento Marítimo be allowed to work” in rescuing people in distress, to avoid tragedies like this.
Belarra made these statements in Hernani (Gipuzkoa), where he visited a social project this Friday. The minister, from Unidas Podemos, has insisted that “Spain should have a migration policy based solely and exclusively on respect for Human Rights”, something that, according to what she has said, has already “transmitted” to the Government, “both internally as externally”.
He specifically referred to the role of Salvamento Marítimo, a state company about which he said that “it has worked for a long time in Spain in an absolutely magnificent way, rescuing thousands of people who were in a dramatic situation in our waters.”
