Madrid (EFE).- Last April, the Canary Islands was the third destination community by number of foreign tourists, receiving 1.2 million international visitors, which represented an interannual growth of 4.5%, according to data released this Thursday by the INE.
The entry of foreign tourists reached a record figure of 21 million between January and April, 32.4% more than a year earlier, and total spending rose to 25,681 million euros, 36.6% more than in 2022 and 14.5% above the pre-pandemic figures, in 2019.
According to data published this Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), 7.2 million international tourists arrived in Spain in April, 18.5% more than in the same month of 2022, and spent 8,480 million euros, 22.7% more, which represents a record for that month.
By country, the United Kingdom leads the outbound tourist market with 1.4 million visitors in April, after growing 8.7% since the same month in 2022.
In a note, the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, stressed that these are “extraordinary data that show that Spain is at the forefront of world tourism, that tourism recovery is complete and that government policies work” .
Average spending per tourist in April stood at 1,172 euros, 3.6% more than in the same month of 2022, and average daily spending increased 11.6%, up to 173 euros.
The average duration of international tourist trips was 6.8 days, a similar figure to that of the same month last year; the majority stay among tourists in April ranges from four to seven nights, with more than 3.7 million travelers choosing this modality and an annual increase of 18.3%.
ORIGIN OF TRAVELERS
Behind the United Kingdom, which is the main issuing market, are France and Germany, which each contribute more than a million tourists; the arrival of Frenchmen grew by 26.9% and that of Germans by 2%.
However, it is the visitors from the United States that grow the most, 60.7% more in April of this year than in April 2022 and 75.4% more between January and April; Italian tourists rose 29%, and those from Portugal, 29.6%.
MAIN DESTINATIONS
Catalonia was the main destination for tourists in April, with 21.3% of the total, after the arrival of 1.5 million travelers, 33% more than a year earlier; the origin of the travelers was 25% French and 10.1% American.
Next comes the Balearic Islands, with 16.3% of the total, 1.2 million tourists who have grown by 10.5%; in terms of country of origin, 39.7% come from Germany and 18.3% from the United Kingdom.

Between January and April, the communities that have received the most tourists are the Canary Islands, with almost 4.9 million and an increase of 23.5% compared to the same period in 2022; Catalonia, with 4.3 million and an increase of 45.4%, and Andalusia, with more than 3.1 million, 38.7% more.
Of the rest of the communities, the annual increase of 27.3% in the number of tourists who arrived in Andalusia stands out; after it, the second fastest growing is the Community of Madrid, with 21.8% compared to 2022, and in third place was the Valencian Community, with an increase of 10.7%. EFE
