Barcelona (EFE).- The head of the list of the PDeCAT-Espai CiU to the Congress for Barcelona, Roger Montañola, has vindicated this Monday the model of doing “politics for adults” that the PNV deploys in Madrid, against the “proclamations” of independence by JxCat.
Montañola has participated in the cycle of press conferences for Catalan candidates for the general elections on July 23 organized by EFE, in which he has remarked that “the process has ended” and it is necessary for Catalan politics to turn the page.
“We are in 2023 and the trick has already been seen. There are no more rabbits in the hat to deceive the citizens”, said Montañola, alluding to the electoral offer of pro-independence forces such as JxCat.
The PDeCAT-Espai CiU candidate has stressed that “the results that the process has provided are zero”, because “none of the objectives” set out in 2017 have been met.
“We no longer have self-government, Catalan is worse than it was, the financing system has not improved,” said Montañola, who is committed to a turn towards “realism, common sense and pragmatism.”
Once it has been established that “there is no independence”, according to Montañola, it is necessary to “focus on the economy” and “negotiate in Madrid, as the CiU representatives had historically done or as the PNV now habitually does, with great success”.
“While here we make big proclamations, the Basques negotiate and each day have more self-government, they make politics for adults,” Montañola remarked, convinced that in recent years in Catalonia a “childish” or “adolescent” policy has been made.
That is why Montañola feels “identified” with the PNV model and aspires to represent “a similar role” in Congress, in contrast to the “great proclamations” of the independence movement, which “have achieved nothing for Catalonia.”
In contrast to JxCat, he has recognized that ERC “has made a more adult policy”, as “also” the four PDeCAT deputies, offering to negotiate with the Government any possible “benefit” for Catalonia.
Montañola to Mas: “I don’t owe anyone anything”
Montañola, who aspires to obtain four deputies in the 23J elections, has vindicated the political legacy of the old CiU, but has not shown concern about the fact that former leaders of the nationalist federation such as Artur Mas himself have distanced themselves from their candidacy.
After Mas publicly regretted that the PDeCAT is present in these elections and competes with JxCat, Montañola has warned: “I do not owe anything to anyone, I should not give explanations to any other leader. I have all the respect for former CiU leaders, but Catalonia must turn the page”.
“We are free people,” he stressed.
