Santa Cruz de La Palma (EFE).- The nationalist Sergio Rodríguez, from CC, has been invested this Tuesday as the new president of the Cabido de La Palma, after having prevailed in the last local elections on May 28 by an absolute majority over the parties that made up the previous government of the island, PSOE and PP.
The new president of the Cabildo will govern the institution with an absolute majority, since his party achieved 11 of the 21 councilors that make up the corporation in the last elections, with 46.84 percent of the votes, 7,677 more than those reached by the candidate of CC to the insular corporation four years ago.
From now on, the five representatives of the PSOE will remain in the opposition, headed by former vice-president Borja Perdomo, and the five councilors of the PP, with Nieves Hernández as spokesman after the former president of the Cabildo in the last legislature, Mariano, did not collect his act of counselor. The previous absolute majority in the Cabildo de La Palma dates back to the 2007-2011 term with the also nationalist José Luis Perestelo at the head of the Corporation, a position he also held, with the same support, four years earlier.
The new president of the Cabildo de La Palma, Sergio Rodríguez, born in Venezuela, 54 years old and with a degree in English Philology, has been mayor of El Paso for the last eight years and regional parliamentarian in the last legislature.
The new president of the Cabildo de La Palma, in his first speech before the insular plenary session, declared his commitment “to the palm trees and the palm trees in a four-year period that will be marked by opportunities and challenges” and said that he will dedicate “the maximum dedication in meet their demands.”
The insular president has pointed out that at the most complicated moment in the history of La Palma, during the eruption, “a strong government was needed”, for which reason he considers that in order to redirect the situation on the island “a change of direction is urgently needed in the land policy”.
Rodríguez has recognized “the difficulty of the challenge that lies ahead”, but has assured that he will “fight” to fulfill the commitments acquired with the people of La Palma, such as the return of the real value of what was lost to those affected by the eruption, the impulse to the recovery of the LP – 2 highway, or the search for solutions for Puerto Naos and La Bombilla.
The recently elected insular president, and former mayor of El Paso, has indicated that “the people of the municipalities affected by the volcano, not only where I was mayor, have seen a different management in CC for which they have decided to bet.”
The spokespersons for the opposition groups have agreed to congratulate the new president of the Cabildo and its formation, the Canary Islands Coalition, for the electoral results, to later ensure that they will exercise supervision and control over the government “to ensure that the promises made are carry out”.
