Málaga, (EFE) Carlos de Bariloche (Argentina).
During the 172nd assembly of the International Bureau of Exhibitions (BIE, for its acronym in French), which is made up of 179 states and will take place in Paris, the mystery of a project that Malaga began working on four years ago will be cleared up, although the candidacy was formally presented in January 2022.
Unlike the Universal Expositions -such as the one in Seville in 1992-, which are held every 5 years in an area with no surface limit and for six months, the International ones take place for three months on a maximum surface area of 25 hectares and address a specific theme.
The last International Expo in Spain -renamed Specialized- took place in Zaragoza in 2008 with the motto “Water and sustainable development”.
Malaga’s proposal for Expo 2027
Málaga’s candidacy to host the Expo in 2027, entitled “The urban age: towards the sustainable city”, is based on the premise that by 2050 more than three quarters of the world’s population will live in cities.
For this reason, there is a need for a reflection on how to make demographic and urban growth compatible with the protection of the environment.
The Expo, which would be held between June 5 and September 5, encourages the use of innovation to transform cities into more efficient environments.
Thus, the sample has been conceived as a platform to show the advances in sustainable mobility. Solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal and other clean energy sources.
The site would be located in the west of the city, in the Buenavista area (Campanillas district). And it would receive 3.1 million visitors who would make 7.5 million visits.
The candidacy has the support of the central government, the Junta de Andalucía, the Provincial Council, the Malaga City Council and more than 260 entities and companies.
If chosen, the capital of the Costa del Sol will focus on sustainability, after a transformation focused in recent years on culture and technology.
Minnesota and Phuket…
-Minnesota (United States): “Healthy people, healthy planet: Well-being and well-being for all”. It would be held from May 15 to August 15, 2027.
He was the first to present his candidacy before the BIE, in July 2021. He had already attended with the same theme to organize the 2023 Expo, which Buenos Aires won, although the Argentine capital resigned due to the pandemic.
The event would take place in the city of Bloomington, and would receive 13.3 million attendees (90% non-residents). It would be the first Expo to take place in the US in more than 40 years, after the one held in New Orleans (Universal) in 1984.
-Phuket (Thailand): “The future of life: living in harmony, sharing prosperity”. From March 20 to June 17, 2028.
Thailand aims to become the pioneer country in Southeast Asia to celebrate this event. Among the challenges facing humanity, he cites health risks, the climate crisis, the loss of biodiversity and inequalities.
The exhibition, which aims to establish innovative and collaborative solutions towards a sustainable future, is expected to receive some 7 million visits.
… Belgrade and San Carlos de Bariloche
-Belgrade (Serbia): “Play for humanity: sport and music for all”. From May 15 to August 15, 2027.
It will explore the importance of games, sports and music in human evolution to inspire participants to discover how these tools can help solve some of the world’s challenges and create a more resilient and creative society for the future.
The Serbian capital expects the exhibition to receive around 4 million visits.
-San Carlos de Bariloche (Argentina): “Nature + Technology = Sustainable Energy. A viable future for humanity”. Between February 1 and April 30, 2027.
The proposal proposes a synergy between knowledge, nature and technology in favor of sustainability. Its managers estimate that some 3.5 million visitors will attend the Expo.
Patagonia plays the card of novelty, since Latin America has never had an Exposition of this type. Due to the pandemic, Argentina gave up in 2020 to organize the Specialized Exhibition scheduled for 2023 in Buenos Aires.
the decisive assembly
On June 21, starting at 9:30 a.m., the five candidates to organize an Expo in 2027/28 will make the final presentations of their projects in the assembly and then the states present will choose the host of the exhibition in a secret ballot , through the principle of “one country, one vote”.
According to the BIE, the states base their decision on the conclusions of the fact-finding missions, the proposed theme and whether it is relevant to their participation in the Expo, as well as their bilateral relations with the candidate countries.
A candidate must receive a two-thirds majority of the vote to be elected in the first round. If none succeeds, the applicant who receives the least support is eliminated and the procedure is repeated.
If only two candidates remain, the one with the simple majority of the votes will be proclaimed the host of the next International Expo.
Once appointed, the organizer will continue to work with the BIE to formalize the project and present a file that must be approved by the general assembly of the bureau.
The most recent Specialized Expo took place between June 10 and September 10, 2017 Astana (Kazakhstan), under the motto “Energy of the future” and received almost 4 million visits. EFE
