Palma, June 17 (EFE) islands and, furthermore, those with the largest population, headed by Palma.
Palma, where 36% of the Balearic Islands live, has the “popular” Jaime Martínez as its new mayor, after eight years of left-wing coalition governments.
Martínez has been invested only with the votes of the eleven councilors of the PP, since he has rejected the pact of absolute majority and common government that Vox had offered him, which has six councilors, and has chosen to lead the consistory in a minority.
However, in the second most populous municipality in the Balearic Islands, Calvià, where the PSOE won the elections on May 28, the leadership has been taken by the PP candidate, Juan Antonio Amengual, because he has agreed with Vox to form a government of coalition.
This same formula of alliance with the far-right party, although in these cases the PP was the most voted list, has allowed the investiture as mayors of Xisca Lascolas in Llucmajor and Jaume Llompart in Marratxí.
In Manacor, the fourth largest municipality on the islands, the agreement between Més and the PSOE allows Miquel Oliver, the nationalist candidate, to continue as head of the consistory, while in Inca, another of the ten large towns in the archipelago, a similar agreement but with a socialist majority maintains Virgilio Moreno as mayor.
In Eivissa and Santa Eulària des Riu, the two most populated municipalities on the island of Ibiza, where the plenary sessions have been convened in the afternoon, the absolute majority of the PP means the investiture as mayors of Rafa Triguero, who takes over from the socialist Rafa Ruiz in the capital, and Carmen Ferrer, who repeats in the position.
Formentera, governed by an island council that is also the town hall, has Llorenç Córdoba, from Sa Unió, as its new president, a coalition that also includes the PP. The left had ruled the island for the past two decades.
All the municipalities of Menorca will be governed by the PP, except Maó, where Héctor Pons has received the vote of the nationalists of Ara although he has not yet closed the agreement with them to govern together.
Precisely the lack of understanding between the PSOE and PSM Més, the two left-wing parties that have a majority in the Ciutadella town hall, has given way to the appointment as mayor of the head of the PP list, Juana Mari Pons, whose candidacy had won the elections. (photo) EFE
