Vitoria (EFE).- The socialist Maider Etxebarria has become the first woman to be mayor of Vitoria.
It has added the votes of the PSE-PNV pact and also those of the PP.
The PP has supported her to prevent the EH Bildu candidate, Rocío Vitero, the most voted on May 28, from being elected.
It has added 6 councilors from the PSE, 6 from the PNV and 6 from the PP, with which it has achieved the support of 18 of the 27 mayors.
The abertzale candidate has been left with 9 votes: 7 from her group and 2 from Elkarrekin.
With this, the popular have fulfilled their promise to give the votes “gratis et amore” to prevent the Mayor’s Office from ending up in the hands of EH Bildu.
This is how they have made it easier for the Socialists to run the Vitoria City Council again 12 years after the end of Patxi Lazcoz’s term.
The pride of being the first female mayor of Vitoria
Once elected, the new mayor has expressed her “honor and pride” for having become the first female mayor.
He has made a plea in favor of equality and having “more women at the helm.”
He has announced his intention to reissue the government agreement with the PNV that the previous legislature led by the jeltzales with Gorka Urtaran at the helm.
“But I also reach out from minute one to reach broad agreements that provide stability to this mandate. We have common objectives and we must value them”, Etxebarria has invited.
He has transferred an “offer of stability, closeness and agreements”.

In the plenary session, which the outgoing mayor, Gorka Urtaran, has not attended, the councilors have sworn or promised the position with different formulas.
The new mayoress has done it in Basque and councilors of the PNV and Elkarrekin have added the phrase “by legal imperative”.
After the plenary session, Vitero commented that EH Bidu “has always opted for a city that advances and progresses and that is what the polls asked of us”
“It is clear that we are facing a change in the political cycle in the Basque Country. We saw it in Gasteiz, where we had the opportunity to create a progressive and comprehensive government. The PNV has preferred to join with the PSE and with the most rancid right, the PP, and that is not what the citizens asked for ”, he added.
PNV and PSE agreement with the support of the PP for the mayoress
Beatriz Artolazabal (PNV) has explained that she has voted for Etxebarria in compliance with the agreement between the PNV and PSE to give certainty to the Basque institutions.
“Ainhoa Domaica (PP), who has supported the PSE, has commented that it has been a source of pride to experience the historic moment of having a female mayor in Vitoria and at the same time that the six votes of the PP have allowed EH Bildu not to govern Vitoria.
Starting tomorrow, Domaica pointed out, “we have a clear commitment to the people of Vitoria and to Vitoria to change our city’s direction and provide the stability it needs with agreements.”
Garbiñe Ruiz (Elkarrekin Podemos), has explained that they have voted for the EH Bildu candidate because they have opted for a progressive and left-wing government.
Finally, the general secretary of the Basque socialists, Eneko Andueza, has ruled out that they have had or will have any agreement with the PP for the support of this formation for Etxebarria. EFE
