Santa Cruz de Tenerife, (EFE) , has said that the municipal government that has been formed fulfills a mandate of the citizens expressed “unequivocally” at the polls.
Statement with which the PSOE candidate, Patricia Hernández, has disagreed, since her formation achieved 10 councilors and was the most voted for on May 28, the day on which Vox obtained representation in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council for the first time with 3 councilors.
With the CC-PP agreement to govern during the next term, the agreement reached by these two parties in July 2020 is renewed, when through a motion of censure they removed the mayor’s office from the socialist Patricia Hernández.
In the constituent session, Patricia Hernández, PSOE candidate, who topped the list with the most votes, obtained the votes of her 10 councilors and Alejandro Gómez, from Vox, the three of the mayors that this political force obtained on May 28.
The reading of the votes to choose who will be in charge of the Mayor’s Office was accompanied at times by applause by followers and relatives of José Manuel Bermúdez and Patricia Hernández, and after the inauguration and the proclamation the spokesmen spoke.
The first to speak was Alejandro Gómez, from Vox, who has asserted that his party will conduct a responsible opposition based on institutional loyalty, and has also indicated that they will support measures that benefit citizens and will oppose those that serve to create or maintain “political stalls” or that are disloyal to Spain.
Carlos Tarife, of the PP, has recognized that the main challenge is to ensure that politics is once again important for citizens, since he has recalled that abstention is around 43 percent, and has commented that if the list is to govern most voted it is necessary to change the national legislation.
The CC spokesman, José Alberto Díaz Estébanez, has highlighted the value of tolerance, as well as the importance of not falling into the trap of tension, to also refer to the fact that to govern is to listen but also to make decisions.
The socialist Patricia Hernández has congratulated José Manuel Bermúdez for achieving what the polls and the street “denied” him, since he has pointed out that his candidacy received more support, and recalled that in July 2020 the motion of censure that CC and PP put to her mayor’s office was justified because she did not have the support of citizens.
But, Patricia Hernández has pointed out, in the last elections his candidacy received 15,472 more votes than in 2019, while Bermúdez’s has fallen by about 6,000, and he has criticized the PP spokesman, Carlos Tarife, for renouncing his electoral program.
According to Patricia Hernández, the municipal government agreement lacks substance and leaves out the promises that were made during the electoral campaign, and she has asked if the effectiveness of CC and PP at the head of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council during the last three years is the reason why European funds have to be returned.
Next, José Manuel Bermúdez said that in July 2020 a group of councilors took a step forward because there was instability and misgovernment, and affirmed that many advances have been made.
The mayor has thanked the predisposition of the PP to shape the mandate of the polls for and continue with the process of institutional stability, as well as with the claim to other administrations so that the capital of Tenerife has a fair treatment, since he has criticized the treatment that it has received both from the Cabildo de Tenerife and from the regional and central governments.
José Manuel Bermúdez has commented that in the middle of the constitution he would not go down into the “mud” to respond to some “expletives”, and has opted for measures such as taking advantage of European funds to promote a more sustainable city, as well as promoting the general plan and the plan del Toscal to recover one of the most emblematic neighborhoods.
