Pamplona, June 15 (EFE).- More than 500 Navarrese town halls and councils will elect their mayors and presidents next Saturday from among the members of the corporations that were elected in the elections on May 28.
In the municipal elections, called in the 272 Navarrese town halls, a total of 2,002 councilors belonging to 513 candidacies were elected, of which 5,801 people took part.
EH Bildu was the force that obtained the greatest municipal representation in Navarra, with 345 councillors, followed by UPN with 246, PSN with 227, Geroa Bai with 45, PP with 36, Contigo Navarra with 21 and Vox with 1. There are also many other candidacies locals who also got mayors in their respective towns.
38 municipalities without candidacy
There were also 38 municipalities in which no candidacy was presented, a situation that especially affects Navarra, since the number was 44 throughout the State. The other six are in Burgos (4), Segovia (1) and Teruel ( 1).
These 38 towns, most of them in the Pyrenees area, are 14% of the total Navarrese municipalities. They are more than in 2019, when the number reached 31, and more than in 2015, the year in which there were 24. Among them are towns such as Barasoain, Bargota, Dicastillo, Isaba, Navascués and Oroz-Betelu.
These municipalities that have not had any candidacy add up to 9,502 inhabitants and have a census of 7,934 voters.
346 councils with 292 candidacies
In the 346 councils of the Foral Community, which encompass a total population of 41,921 inhabitants, 292 candidacies were presented on May 28, made up of a total of 902 candidates.
There are also councils in which no electoral list has been presented, specifically 77.
For both types of local entities, the Governments of Spain (for the municipalities) and of Navarra (for the councils) will once again call elections, which, according to the deadlines provided by law, are usually held in November.
Possibility of extinction of councils
If then there were no candidates, the Government of Navarra will designate management commissions, which are entities that replace corporations to carry out the ordinary affairs of the town.
The functions of mayor or president will be exercised by the member who is elected by a majority of votes among all the members of the commission.
However, the Ley Foral de Administración Local provides that, if in two complete electoral cycles a council does not hold elections due to lack of lists, it will be extinct. Thus, if any council did not hold elections in 2019 and does not hold them this year, either in May or in November, it will be subject to this situation.
