In the first weeks of summer, which will start on June 21 at 4:58 p.m., an increase of “three or four degrees” in the temperature of the Cantabrian Sea is expected, which may affect fishing, specifically bonito, which could drop deeper than usual.
Most likely, the maximum temperatures on the Cantabrian coast will be above the averages for this period during the summer, which are 21.6 degrees in June, 23.6 in July and 24.2 in August.
As Arteche has explained, the models are not so clear in terms of rainfall. While “there are many possibilities” that it will be a rainy summer in the Levant, in the Cantabrian the forecasts “are not conclusive.”
Arteche has warned that during these months you have to be careful with gale and storms, which tend to be concentrated especially in August; the episodes of sudden fog in the Picos de Europa; intense downpours, which can flood caves; or exposure to the sun and heat stroke, especially in children and the elderly.
Very hot and very dry spring
In addition, spring has been the warmest in the historical series for Spain and the second driest. Cantabria has not been an exception and has had a very dry and very hot season, despite the fact that the trend was reversed in May.
March was the driest and warmest of the season compared to normal values for the month, followed by April, which was also considered very dry and very warm, while May was humid and had normal temperatures.
“It needs to rain a little, although the tourism people will not agree,” said Arteche, because the deficit of the hydrological year -from October to September- is 24 percent and with spring the drought has worsened .
The lowest thermometers were concentrated on April 5, especially in the Campoo area, with -10.5 degrees in Nestares as the season’s minimum.
The highest temperature was recorded in Santander on May 3, the date on which almost all the municipalities marked their maximum in spring, which was generally a sunny season without major anomalies in the wind.
During those three months there were 2,365 electrical discharges, 844 of them on May 28, a month that brought together the majority of lightning strikes: 2,226.
