The top US securities regulator said the anonymous whistleblower it awarded provided information that led to a successful enforcement action, but the agency gave no further details.
Success of the reporting program
This sum is intended to incentivize witnesses who can reveal potential violations of the law and “reflects the tremendous success of the whistleblower program,” Gurbir Grewal, director of the SEC’s enforcement division, said in a statement released Friday.
The last most valuable prize was 114 million in October 2020.
This bounty program, according to Grewal, also benefits investors, as whistleblowers have assisted in various enforcement actions that resulted in the return of more than $4 billion in ill-gotten gains and interest.
In fiscal year 2022, the agency reported a record number of civil penalties totaling more than $4.1 billion.
