Oviedo (EFE).- The population at risk of poverty or social exclusion decreased last year in Asturias from 26.3 to 25.3 percent, seven tenths below the national average, according to data from the Living Conditions Survey published this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Said percentage is set with the AROPE rate, which measures poverty not only with income, but also includes severe material deprivation and low employment intensity.
In the case of Asturias, the reduction occurred in its three components: the population at risk of poverty fell from 20.4 to 20.1 percent; the percentage of people in households with severe material and social deprivation dropped from 5.5 to 4.4 percent, and the population in households with low employment intensity -those in which members of working age did so less of 20% of their total work potential during that year- decreased from 14.2 to 12.7 percent.
The survey shows that Asturias has improved in the main parameters of material deprivation analysed, since households with great difficulty in making ends meet have dropped from 6.7 to 6.5 percent, and those who admit to having delays in payments related to the main residence or purchases in installments have fallen from 10 to 7.6 percent.
Likewise, the proportion of households that do not have the capacity to face unforeseen expenses has dropped from 25.9 to 24 percent.
However, the number of families who cannot afford to go on vacation away from home for at least one week a year has risen, from 28.9 to 30.8 percent.
The Arope rate drops in Spain to 26%
In the country as a whole, the population at risk of poverty or social exclusion decreased in 2022 to 26%, compared to 27.8% the previous year, and as in Asturias, the three components included in the AROPE rate.
Thus, the Spanish population at risk of poverty fell from 21.7% to 20.4%; the percentage of people in homes with severe material and social deprivation decreased six tenths, to 7.7%; and that of the population in a situation of low employment intensity went from 11.6% to 8.6%.
In addition, 8.7% of the population made it to the end of the month with “much difficulty” compared to 8.8% in 2021. EFE
