Dhaka (EFE).- At least 19 people died and another 12 were injured this Sunday morning when a bus fell into a ditch on the edge of a road in central Bangladesh, the police confirmed to EFE.
The accident took place at 7.40 a.m. local time (GMT +6) in the Kutubpur area, located in the central district of Madaripur, when the bus carrying more than 30 passengers left the road and fell into a ditch, district police officer Mofazzal Haque said.
As a result, 19 people died, 17 of them on the spot and another two in the hospital, while another 12 were injured and have been taken to a medical center, the superintendent of the Madaripur Police, Masud, told EFE. Alam.
The agent specified that the first investigations indicate that the accident “could have occurred due to speeding. The bus deviated almost 200 meters from the road after breaking the guardrail, ”he said.
Road accidents are frequent in Bangladesh due to the habitual bad state of the roads, congested traffic and the lax behavior of drivers in the face of vehicle traffic regulations in the country.
Nearly 10,000 people were killed and 12,356 injured in 6,749 road accidents across the country throughout 2022, according to data compiled by the Bangladesh Passenger Welfare Association.
