Gijón (EFE).- Asturian and Galician-Asturian, the variety spoken in the western region of the Principality, will be included in the national and international programming of the Instituto Cervantes despite not being considered an official language thanks to the agreement signed today by this institution with the regional government.
The agreement contemplates that its authors participate in the programming of the Institute and that the Principality intervenes in the selection of people who participate in the activities that are programmed, taking into account factors such as having obtained some of the prizes that distinguish the best works in Asturian or Galician. -Asturian.
The agreement was signed today in Gijón by the director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero, and the Minister of Culture, Language Policy and Tourism, Berta Piñán, and also contemplates the making available by the Principality of cultural spaces that are of its ownership to carry out all kinds of cultural activities.
For García Montero, one of the obligations of the Instituto Cervantes is to “collaborate with the autonomous communities to bring plurality abroad” while, for Piñán, the agreement not only strengthens the links between the two “but is an unrepeatable opportunity for the language Asturian trip around the world”.
Annual meeting of the Cervantes Institute
After signing the agreement, García Montero has announced that Oviedo, Gijón and Avilés will host the Annual Meeting of Directors of the Cervantes Institute from July 11 to 14, a summit that will bring together some seventy directors of this institution and which is usually inaugurated by Queen Letizia .
In these periodic meetings, the heads of the Cervantes Institute study the progress and challenges of the body that promotes the Spanish language and the co-official languages and disseminates the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.
Said meeting will also include as a central act a tribute to the Mierense singer Víctor Manuel, who will leave a legacy to the Caja de las Letras, which will also soon be joined by that of the late philologist, linguist and professor at the University of Oviedo Emilio Alarcos.
This Caja de las Letras already received the legacy of Fernán Coronas, with his Asturian translations of German poets and Japanese haikus, or that of the Oviedo poet Ángel González. EFE
