Vitoria, (EFE).- Faking illness to avoid going to work is the most intolerable behavior for Basques, according to a survey by the Basque Government.
Thus, 91% believe that faking illness in order not to work in any case cannot be tolerated. The behaviors following work absenteeism with the lowest tolerance are not reporting when a crime is witnessed (86%) and sneaking into transportation without paying (85%).
Less rejection than faking an illness in order not to work, something intolerable for the Basques, leads to agreeing with a merchant or professional who does not charge VAT in order to pay less for a product or service (75%) and exceed the speed limit on the road ( 68%).
In the latter case, the difference between men and women is evident, since while the vast majority of them think that it is intolerable to exceed the speed limit on the road (75%), men are more permissive (59%) .
Increase interest in politics
The survey also asks about interest in politics, which is on the rise. Four out of ten people state that when they were little they talked about politics a lot or a lot (40%); six out of ten continue to do so with family (61%) and with friends (56%).
The percentage drops to 37% among colleagues from work or studies. The evolution is positive in each of these areas, so it seems that the public is talking more and more about politics.
The perceived freedom to talk about politics is also increasing, with 48% saying they feel free to talk about politics with everyone, while 42% only with certain people. Only 9% say they do not feel free to talk about politics with almost anyone, the lowest percentage in the series since 1987.
The percentage of those who are interested in politics is increasing, going from the minimum of 20% at the beginning of 2010 to the current 42% who say they are very interested. In any case, 58% show little or no interest.
On the other hand, some opinions regarding Basque politics also show a better opinion of society about politics. Opinion favorable to referendums is growing (75%, up 5 points) or the ability of citizens to influence government decisions (35%, up 12 points).
Majority support for democracy
Support for the democratic system is the majority (78%), although there is also 13% who believe that there is not much difference. This opinion is more widespread among people born abroad and those who are under 45 years of age.
One of the key issues regarding the maintenance of democracy for the people interviewed is that everyone can express their opinions, no matter how extreme they are. 8.5 points out of 10.
Membership of groups and associations grows. In which the population participates the most are social support or human rights organizations (21% actively belong), cultural or leisure groups (16%), sports groups (15%), trade unions or business associations ( 13%) and the neighbors (12%).
