Brasilia (EFE).- The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, recalled this Wednesday the coup attack on the three powers perpetrated by thousands of Bolsonaro radicals just a month ago, with the promise of “uniting” and “reconstructing” the country.
«On January 8, the headquarters of our powers was invaded and vandalized by people who do not respect the people, nor Brazil. A month later, we continue working firmly in the defense of democracy, the union and the reconstruction of the country, “said the president on his social networks.
Lula accompanied his message with an almost five-minute video, released on official government channels, showing the violent assault on the offices of the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court carried out by followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro on past January 8.
Lula promises punishment of those responsible
The episode, described by the Executive as an “attempted coup”, occurred a week after Lula assumed the Presidency for the third time, after winning the October 2022 elections against Bolsonaro, whom they are investigating for inciting his followers to attack the institutions.
The video reflects the destruction caused by far-right radicals, whom the current Administration associates with terms such as “terrorism”, “criminal association” and “crimes against cultural heritage”.
It also rescues statements by the head of state promising to punish all those responsible and accusing the police and military sectors in charge of the security of the three powers of “negligence”, something that is under investigation.
Likewise, he recalls the meetings that Lula held with the presidents of the Legislative and Judicial powers and the vast majority of the governors of the 27 Brazilian states.
Finally, the video includes the unexpected dismissal of the now ex-commander of the Army, General Júlio Cesar de Arruda, and the appointment of his replacement, General Tomás Paiva, a decision with which Lula wanted to close the “fracture of trust” opened with the leadership of the land force since the assault on Brasilia.
