The National Police arrested this man a few days ago, after an investigation carried out between different institutions and security forces in what is one of the hot spots on the island due to the high risk and number of alarms that occur.
Dávila, at a press conference with the mayor of Los Realejos, Adolfo González, and the head of the Section of the Organic Unit for Forest Fires and Associated Media of the Cabildo, José María Sánchez, explained that the investigation against the alleged arsonist continues and it is not ruled out that it could be related to several of the more than one hundred attempts or fires that have occurred in the area since the year 2000, especially in the Campeches area.
“I want to give a firm message that these actions cannot, should not, and will not go unpunished. Burning or setting fire to our natural heritage, our mountains, our homes, will come to nothing and the Cabildo de Tenerife will be in front of those who intentionally set fire to our mountains, our agrarian and agricultural areas”, Dávila said.
For his part, the head of the Section of the Organic Unit for Forest Fires and Associated Media of the Tenerife corporation stressed that Los Realejos has been “historically one of the hot spots on the island”, which is why they have been “for more than twenty years investigating the causes of near misses or fires” and there is an “almost total percentage of intentionality”, since “there are no accidents or negligence”.
Although sometimes these fires may have a small area, from 200 to 2,000 square meters, “in extreme weather situations they end up affecting thousands of hectares. And they are fires that no matter how many people we put there, no matter how many aerial means, no matter how many brigade members, they will always be more powerful than our extinction capacity”, Sánchez pointed out.
The mayor of Los Realejos has been grateful for the work carried out by all the institutions and “hopeful” for the good news that this “arrest means for the neighbors.”
At the same time, he has indicated that “the investigation is still open” and that a “special surveillance device” has been launched, which in the coming weeks will add the installation of video surveillance cameras in the area in order to more effectively preserve the security of forests, homes and the people who inhabit the island of Tenerife.
