Vitoria, 24 July (EFE).- The students of the Basque universities have risen for the fifth consecutive course.
Basque universities exceeded 70,000 enrollments in the 2021/22 academic year, with the fifth consecutive year of promotion and the first since the 2004/05 academic year in which the aforementioned figure of 70,000 enrollments was exceeded.
According to Eustat data, enrollment was 0.8% more than in the previous academic year.
In Euskadi there are four universities: the public one from the UPV/EHU, plus the private ones from Deusto, Mondragon and the recently created Euneiz, from Vitoria.
Seven out of ten students in public universities
According to these statistics, seven out of ten students chose to study at public universities.
This proportion was maintained in undergraduate studies, but the scenario was different at higher levels.
While 40% of master’s students chose the private system, only 14% did so to develop their doctoral thesis.
Women are 54% of university students
Women accounted for 54% of university students.
However, the distribution by sex was uneven depending on the field of study chosen.
Thus, the field of health and social services or education had more than 70% women among their students.
The most feminized grades were Early Childhood Education, Pedagogy and Nursing.
At the opposite extreme, the technical fields of study were those with the greatest male presence.
Women accounted for less than 10% of the students enrolled in degrees in Marine Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Digital Industry or Mechatronic Engineering.
Degrees from the business or science sector registered an equal distribution of students.

In addition, the public university is gaining ground over the private one in double degrees.
These are programs that allow those who study them to simultaneously obtain two degrees in less time than they would require if they studied them separately.
The offer of places in double degrees was higher in private universities, and this was reflected in the enrollment data.
Seven out of 10 double degree students chose a private university to carry out their training.
It should be noted that the increase in enrollment observed in the last year is attributable to the progress of the double degrees in the public university.
The teaching staff of the universities, equal
The gender gap in university teaching staff has been gradually decreasing in recent years.
In the 1995/96 academic year, only 3 out of 10 teachers were women.
However, this proportion has been equating and in the 2021/22 academic year the distribution by sex was equal.
The male staff has remained practically constant for the last 25 years, varying between 3,000 and 3,500 teachers.
For its part, in the same period, the number of female teachers has doubled, from 1,464 in the 1997/98 academic year to 2,947 in 2021/22, the last academic year analysed. EFE
