García Castellón thus addresses the argument of the Prosecutor’s Office, which in a letter dated July 13 indicated that “the investigation can be terminated, so it is not necessary to agree to an extension,” as Villarejo’s lawyer did.
In this way, the judge only has to decide whether to open an abbreviated procedure and the consequent opening of an oral trial.
The magistrate was investigating whether Iberdrola hired the former commissioner for one million euros between 2004 and 2012 to, among other things, infiltrate platforms contrary to his interests or investigate a shareholder critical of his management.
Last October, the criminal chamber of the National Court rejected an appeal from the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and ratified the free dismissal for the president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, in the case.
Just two weeks ago, the criminal court rejected the request of the former Security Director of Iberdrola Antonio Asenjo to order the dismissal of the crime of bribery in piece 17 of the so-called “Tandem case”, so that it is now, when the investigation has concluded, when the dismissal requested by Asenjo will be assessed.
In his order, the judge also agrees that a series of testimonies, files and emails in relation to the role played by Asenjo in hiring Villarejo are incorporated into the case.
