Madrid (EFE).- The deadline to send the vote by mail is running out. This Thursday, July 20, is the last day for voters who have waited until now to deposit their postal vote at the Post Office for the general elections next Sunday.
After the requests to vote by this procedure have reached a historical record, reaching 2.6 million requests -due to the coincidence of the elections with the summer holidays-, Correos has informed that it has already made available all the documentation to voters.
In addition, voters who have not received the electoral documentation at home because they were absent when they went to deliver it by hand, will also be able to pick it up tomorrow at the offices where they have requested it and cast their vote at the same time.
The volume of requests to vote by mail in these elections is 80.45% higher than in the general elections of June 26, 2016 (1,453,446) which, until now, marked the maximum number of votes by mail in democracy.
Vote in person and with identification
As a novelty, in these elections voters will have to exercise their right to vote personally and by showing identification, as stipulated by the Central Electoral Board (JEC) in light of the frauds that occurred in Melilla and in other locations in the past municipal and regional elections. .
In this way, when depositing the envelopes and electoral ballots in the Post Offices, the DNI, passport, driving license or any other valid document will be required.
However, the JEC has established that, if a citizen is unable for justified reasons to go to cast the vote at the office, another person can do so on their behalf by delivering a signed authorization and a copy of the identity document.
The correspondence addressed to the polling stations will be kept until July 23, when the Post Office will transfer it to the polling stations at nine in the morning and, throughout the day, the votes that could be received that same day could continue to be sent. until eight in the evening, when the polling stations close.
