Vitoria (EFE).- Deaths increased by 4.9% in the Basque Country last year. Specifically, the number of deaths in the Basque Country in 2022 was 24,194.
It represents an increase of 4.9% compared to 2021, according to Eustat data, a year in which the most notable was the sharp increase in mortality in July (+29.6%).
This figure is 12.2% higher than that of 2019, prior to the pandemic, and is lower than that of 2020, the first of the covid, at 53 deaths.
By territories, the deaths in 2022 have been 3,170 in Álava, which represents an increase of 6.7% in the last year, the most pronounced; in Bizkaia there were 13,152 (+5.3%) and 7,872 in Gipuzkoa (+3.3%).
In 2022 there have been significant differences by month compared to the previous year: Between January and July mortality increased by 10.2% compared to 2021, highlighting July, the month in which the increase was 29.6%.
However, in August and September deaths decreased by 0.1% and 2.1%, respectively.
In October it increased again compared to the previous year (3.8%), but in November and December it fell again by significant percentages, -6.3% and -5.6%, respectively.
More female deaths
By sex, there were 12,330 deaths of women and 11,864 of men.
The average age of the people who died during the year 2022 was 81.3 years.
A decade ago, in 2012, it was 78.9 years, that is, there has been an increase in life of 2.4 years in this time.
In 2022, men died on average at 78.1 years and women at 84.4, while in 2012 the averages had been, respectively, 75.4 and 82.7 years.
Regarding infant mortality, 41 children under one year of age died in the Basque Country.
521 people aged 100 or over (born in 1922 or earlier) died, which means 100 more centenarians died than in 2021.

By causes, 26.4% of the deaths that occurred last year, 6,378 deaths, were due to tumors.
Next came diseases of the circulatory system, with 23.8% (5,767 deaths), followed in third place by mental and behavioral disorders with 8.2% (1,988).
The reason for the deaths continues to be different according to sex, since, among men, tumors exceeded diseases of the circulatory system.
Among women, the main cause was cardiovascular diseases and the second, tumors.
The covid produced 7% of deaths
In 2022 there were a total of 1,721 deaths due to COVID-19 as the fundamental cause, 7.1% of the total. Deaths from this cause are 2.3% more than those produced in 2021.
Finally, the vegetative growth was negative, since there were 10,558 more deaths than births. By province, there were negative balances in the three provinces: in Bizkaia it was 6,291 people, in Gipuzkoa 3,364 and in Álava 903.
