Girona (EFE) – A woman from Girona has managed to save the chicken coop that she has had in her house for more than 30 years after a complaint filed by a neighbor, when the Generalitat considered that her three chickens and a duck are pets, The council has informed.
Montserrat Agell lives in the Montjuïc neighborhood of Girona and in September 2022 she received a notification from the city council informing her that she had to remove the animals, after a neighbor filed a complaint with the consistory.
Environmental agents inspected the home and urged Agell to remove the animals since they could not be on urban land, and to present documentary evidence of the final destination of the birds.
Chicken eggs: family consumption
But Agell did not want to get rid of the animals and filed an appeal with the Generalitat, in which he again asked to keep them at home.
He had to prove that the eggs of the chickens are only consumed in the family environment and that no benefits are obtained from them.
Now, the Generalitat has finally considered that birds are pets and Agell will be able to keep them at home.
From the Animal Welfare area of the Girona City Council they have explained that, although the new Catalan law on animal welfare “does not contemplate chickens as pets, existing coexistence situations must be respected.”
