Palma (EFE).- Rudy Fernández, captain of the Spanish basketball team and Real Madrid player, has announced that he will end his professional career with the national team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
During the presentation of the campus that bears his name in the Mallorcan town of Port de Pollença, Fernández declared: “I promised my father that the Olympics would be my last tournament and I think it will be like that at a professional level; I hope to finish my career in the Spanish team there”.
The 38-year-old Spaniard is one of the members of the shortlist for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 in Manila, drawn up by coach Sergio Scariolo.
The forward and shooting guard recalled that he has “one more year” left at Real Madrid, as stipulated in a contract that is “almost done”, he specified.
“It may be that I reach the Olympics and that’s where I end up in my career in the Spanish team. I have one year left at Real Madrid, it’s signed, almost done (the contract) but the Olympiad would be my last tournament”, Fernández insisted.
Rudy Fernández, excited about the World Cup
Regarding his inclusion in the preliminary list for the Basketball World Cup, the captain of the Spanish team has been “very excited”.
“I am very excited, very happy to be back in a call for the Spanish team at thirty-eight years of age and that the coach continues to call me to be able to be in team dynamics and to be able to help the youngest in the minutes that I am”, has indicated.
Rudy Fernández has underlined his relationship with the Pollença campus, in which some 200 children will participate between July 8 and 15.
“With my sister (Marta, a former basketball player), we always have this week marked on the calendar. They are all contributing so that we can continue to fulfill the dream of many children and also the dream of continuing to build this campus in Mallorca, which is our island and where we began our first steps as athletes”, the Real Madrid player remarked.
