Santander (EFE).- María José Sáenz de Buruaga (PP) has been sworn in as president of Cantabria, the first woman in the entire history of the autonomous community to assume that responsibility, claiming that this region “deserves much more than it has today” and anticipating that “it will not tremble” when making decisions.
“I am going to dedicate myself body and soul to raising Cantabria and restoring its confidence so that it can grow again,” Buruaga said this Wednesday during his inauguration, an act that took place in the Parliament of Cantabria before a broad institutional representation and the Cantabrian society.
They have witnessed it, in addition to several former presidents of Cantabria, including Miguel Ángel Revilla, the president of Castilla y León, the popular Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, and on behalf of the Executive of Spain the general secretary of Territorial Coordination, Miryam Álvarez, and the delegate of the Government, Ainoa Quiñones.
“This is the most important project of my life and also the greatest responsibility,” said Buruaga, who assumes it “not as the highest power, but as the highest service” after being invested last Monday in the second vote thanks to the abstention of the PRC and with the vote against PSOE and Vox.
“Change what needs to be changed”
Its objective is to “change what needs to be changed” to strengthen the economy of Cantabria, but “always with good sense” and dialogue and moderation, “away from revanchism, intransigence and populism”, he stressed.
Buruaga has reiterated that the axes of his Executive will be “recovering public health so that it is once again at the forefront”, boosting the economy, supporting the family and young people or “dignifying work” in rural areas.
“I have come to govern, to set difficult challenges and to assume responsibilities, not to be there, to be, or to resist”, stressed President Buruaga.
She has claimed to be a Europeanist and “convinced autonomist” president and has promised to exercise self-government “without throwing balls out.” “His real defense of it is to make it work better,” she said.
He has reached out to “everyone” to govern with dialogue, since he will lead a lone Executive and the PP does not have a parliamentary majority, but he has also anticipated that he will seek dialogue with civil society, companies and economic agents. “The future of Cantabria is everyone’s business”, he highlighted.
For this, it will have “a great team of men and women, directors with talent and experience, full of desire and energy”, which it will be making known over the next few days.
Trust in a “more attentive” Government of Spain
He referred to the upcoming elections on 23J, from which, he hoped, “a more attentive and committed government” will be elected, with which he will defend “pending commitments” through “a useful and effective claim.”
With almost thirty years of experience in politics, a career that began in his town, Suances, Buruaga has claimed his “immense faith in Cantabria, the best land in the world.”
“Cantabria deserves much more than what it has today. We have a lot to do and it will surely be a great adventure full of difficulties, work and also many joys”, he stressed, before opining that the region needs more economic dynamism, more investment and more employment, and “efficient and quality” essential services ”.
In the chapter of thanks, Buruaga has remembered his family, his party, his predecessors, specifically José Joaquín Martínez Sieso, whom he considers “a reference”; and above all of the Cantabrians for his support.
“I am ready to take on the task and looking forward to beginning to return that enormous amount of trust received”, assured the president of Cantabria, who hopes to undertake this work “being María”, that normal person that she is and that she wants to continue being, has saying.
The new president of Cantabria has added that “work will win everything”. “That will be my currency”, she has concluded herself.
Group reactions
The regionalist spokesman, Pedro Hernando, hopes that the PP government will fulfill its promise of dialogue and promote positive agreements for Cantabria, which in his opinion is “at the forefront of employment, tourism and with the best public services in Spain” after eight years of government of the PRC with the PSOE.
The general secretary of the PSOE of Cantabria, Pablo Zuloaga, has criticized Buruaga’s speech for his perception of the autonomous community, which he has defended that it has “a prosperous economy”, and also its “lack of objectives”.
“The silence of some key words in the speech of who is the first president of the Government of Cantabria in the advancement of equality, diversity policies or the defense of the rights and freedoms of the Cantabrians has been thunderous,” he pointed out.
Leticia Díaz (Vox) has extended her hand to the new government, although she believes that today “she is beginning a leap into the void” because she does not have a sufficient majority to carry out the policies she intends.
In his opinion, this places him “in a situation of weakness that is negative for Cantabria.”
The PP sees it as “a formula” for Spain
The PP has applauded the formula of the government of María José Saénz de Buruaga in Cantabria, alone and with the vote against Vox thanks to the abstention of the PRC and that leaves a “sensible” and “dialogue” Executive.
“This would be the formula that the Spaniards are asking of us and that they will surely ask of us on the next 23J,” said the deputy secretary of the PP Carmen Navarro, who accompanied Buruaga this Wednesday at his inauguration.
Facing the general elections, he has opined that “those who want to stop the extremes and want a moderate government know that the only option is to vote for the PP.”
And he has assured that his party will seek, if it obtains good results, “a broad government, with free hands.”
“That we can return to a sensible and serene policy, that we do not depend on anyone and of course, not subject to anyone’s blackmail either,” he explained.
