Oviedo (EFE) commissions for the next term.
The proposal that the Popular Party, with an absolute majority, has brought to the plenary session calls for an increase of 19.23 percent in the salary for the mayors of the municipal government, 12.50 percent for delegate councilors and 13 percent cent for representatives of the opposition.
The eight full-time councilors who are part of the local government will earn 62,000 euros gross per year, while the three delegates will receive 54,000 euros.
The opposition councilors will charge 52,000 euros a year for full time and the proportional part in the event that they have a partial dedication.
The allowances for attendance at the plenary sessions of the Corporation for those who do not have any type of dedication will be paid with 500 euros, 25 percent more, and the commissions with 400 euros, an increase of 33.33 percent.
On the other hand, the municipal groups will receive a global annual contribution of 430,000 euros, at a rate of 40,000 euros per party and another 10,000 euros for each elected mayor.
Salary increase to “dignify” politics
The initiative has been supported in all its terms by the IU, while Vox has rejected it in its entirety and the PSOE has been opposed to the increase in the salaries of the councilors and the allowances for plenary sessions and commissions since it defended a general increase in the 9.18 percent, the same percentage that has been raised for public officials since 2019.
The first deputy mayor, Mario Arias, has stressed that the increase proposed by the government team is “moderate”, “reasonable” and “balanced” with the aim of “dignifying” political activity in the City Council.
After emphasizing that the mayor, Alfredo Canteli, has once again renounced having a salary as councilor, he has revealed that Oviedo is still “very far” from the salaries of mayors of provincial capitals.
IU supports the government in its “spirit” according to
From the PSOE, Carlos Llaneza has defended the amendment proposed by the Socialists for a more moderate rise, since “political activity can be dignified in many ways.”
The IU spokesman, Gaspar Llamazares, has given his support to the proposal prepared by the PP within the “spirit of dialogue and willingness to agree” started this mandate.
On the contrary, her Vox counterpart, Sonsoles Peralta, has rejected the government’s initiative, understanding that it is “unethical” for there to be a wage increase when citizens are suffering from high tax pressure.
“We have to be the first to set an example of restriction and containment,” he said before Arias invited him to renounce these emoluments if he is contrary to them.
Four permanent commissions
The plenary session of the Corporation has unanimously given the green light to the creation of four permanent commissions (Economy, Interior, Contracting, Citizen Security and Participation; Urban Planning, Infrastructures and Basic Services; Education, Sports, Culture, Public Health and Consumption; and Policies Social and Youth), which will be made up of five councilors from the PP, two from the PSOE, one from Vox and another from IU.
For its part, the Municipal Foundation for Culture will have four representatives from the PP, two from the PSOE and Vox and IU will have one each.
At the end of the plenary session, Canteli thanked the political groups for the “new style” used in their speeches and hoped that “it will be maintained.” EFE
