Madrid (EFE) which implies that the ban on hunting them will be lifted.
According to PP sources, this proposal will be presented tomorrow, along with others from its electoral program for the July 23 elections, and this measure is intended to control the wolf populations north of the Duero and thus avoid conflicts “with extensive livestock farming” and its “negative effects on rural areas and the fight against the demographic challenge”.
The introduction of the wolf in the list of protected species in 2021 and the ban on hunting it has been the subject of controversy in the communities north of the Duero, as ranchers complain that they lose a lot of livestock devoured by these animals.
To this end, the PP will propose the modification of the annex to Royal Decree 139/2011, of February 4, for the development of the List of Wild Species under Special Protection Regime and the Spanish Catalog of Threatened Species, with the aim of “specifying the protection of populations south of the Duero”.
“Favorable” conservation status
With these measures, according to the PP, it is intended to continue guaranteeing a “favorable conservation status” of natural habitats and species of wild flora and fauna, and specifically of the wolf, in accordance with the provisions of article 2 of Directive 92 /43/CEE, of May 21, 1992, “taking into consideration the economic, social, regional and cultural conditions of its environment”.
In addition, according to scientific criteria, adapt the protection of the species “to its current state of conservation”, for which they will maintain the status established for the wolf in annex IV of Directive 92/43/CEE of May 21, 1992.
Likewise, they have pointed out that, in order to “improve the decision-making process”, they will maintain the consensus with the autonomous communities where there are wolf populations.
According to the sources, the population censuses and the dispersion of specimens will be updated with scientific information.
The changes, according to the PP, are intended to ensure that all regions with the presence of the species “justify and argue” any extraction of wolf specimens in authorized areas. EFE
