The regular meeting of the Common Market Council (CMC), the bloc’s political decision-making body, was attended by the foreign ministers of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay -Merkosur member states- and Bolivia, in the process of full accession.
The session takes place in a luxurious hotel inside the Argentinian Iguazú National Park (1,300 kilometers northeast of Buenos Aires), which protects the imposing Iguazú Falls, on the border between Argentina and Brazil.
At the meeting, the ministers of the bloc founded in 1991 will define the decisions and documents that will be submitted to the presidents for consideration this Tuesday.
Santiago Cafiero, Foreign Minister of Argentina -the country that holds the semi-annual presidency of the group until this Tuesday-, welcomed his colleagues and was in charge of inaugurating the session at 10:10 local time (13:10 GMT).
“In this meeting we are going to discuss how we can generate the necessary mechanisms for the harmonious development of our bloc,” said the Argentine foreign minister at the opening of the session, the only section of the meeting that was broadcast openly.
In the afternoon, the representatives of the countries associated with the bloc (Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Guyana and Suriname) are expected to join.
In parallel, this afternoon there will also be a meeting of Ministers of Economy and Presidents of Central Banks of Mercosur, Bolivia and associated countries.
The deliberations on Tuesday will be chaired by Argentine President Alberto Fernández, who, in addition to handing over the bloc’s Presidency to his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will take stock of Mercosur’s activity during the first half of the year.
Among other key issues, the state of trade negotiations with the European Union will be on the table of the presidential dialogue.
The presidential appointment will also be attended by the heads of state of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou; of Paraguay, Mario Abdo Benitez; and from Bolivia, Luis Arce; in addition to Paraguay’s president-elect, Santiago Peña, who will assume the presidency of his country’s Executive on August 15th.
