Madrid (EFE).- Spaniards spent 2.7% more on food in 2022, a year marked by inflation, although this did not translate into higher consumption, which fell 7.1% in volume compared to 2021.
This is how it appears in the report on food consumption in Spain for 2022 from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) presented this Thursday by the head of the department, Luis Planas.

Spaniards consumed 30,946.8 million kilos or liters last year (-7.1% annually), 87.2% of which took place at home and the rest outside of it, so that per capita consumption it was 698.5 kilos.
Expenditure on food amounted to 107,780.5 million euros (+2.7%), 68.6% within the home, with a per capita expenditure of 2,582 euros.
Consumption at home decreased 8.8% annually, standing at 26,987.66 million kilos or liters, although spending decreased 0.9%, to 73,893.4 million euros, influenced by the increase in prices by 8.7%.
Fresh food continued to be relevant in domestic consumption, since it represented 37.3% in volume and 40.7% in value.
By purchasing channels, supermarkets concentrated 49.5% of food in the home, followed at a distance by discount stores (13.7%), hypermarkets (12.8%), traditional stores (12, 7%), other channels (11.2%) and e-commerce (2.3%).
Extra-domestic consumption, outside the home, continued on the path of recovery, with growth of 6.1% in volume (3,959.2 million kilos) and 11.5% in value (33,887.1 million euros). , after becoming more expensive by 5.1%.
Outside the home, each Spaniard consumed an average of 115 kilos worth 984.5 euros in 2022.
In addition, orders to take away or at home were maintained. 69.1% of extra-domestic consumption was made in the establishment, 11.6% in one’s own home, 6.2% at work, 5.2% at the home of others and 4.9% at the street.
Having less time to cook at home, preparations that provide health, speed and comfort were combined, with a greater preference for grilled dishes, without cooking or cold, and boiled or steamed.
