“It should be noted that this is the first massacre committed by Russian warplanes inside Syrian territories during 2023,” the Observatory said.
The White Helmets rescue group raised the death toll of civilians to nine “after Russian warplanes attacked a vegetable and fruit market on the outskirts of the city of Jisr al Shughur.”
Most of the province of Idlib, considered the last opposition stronghold in Syria, and various areas of neighboring Aleppo remain in the hands of a myriad of rebel groups more than twelve years after the outbreak of the armed conflict in the Arab country.
The Levant Liberation Agency controls most of these areas, which are relatively frequently subjected to ground attacks by Syrian government forces and, recently less frequently, to shelling by its ally Russia.
