Málaga, (EFE).- The city of Málaga defends its candidacy for Expo 2027 for the last time this Wednesday, with the motto “The urban age: towards the sustainable city”, before the delegates of the International Exhibitions Office (BIE, for its acronym in French) in Paris, which will choose the venue for this international event in 2027/2028.
The Andalusian capital will be in charge of opening the fire and will make its final presentation in the assembly at around 9:35 am. It will be followed by its four rivals: San Carlos de Bariloche (Argentina), Minnesota (USA), Phuket (Thailand) and Belgrade (Serbia).
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares; the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno. The president of the Malaga Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, and the mayor of the Malaga capital, Francisco de la Torre.
In the last hours, the representatives of the Spanish candidacy have been optimistic about the possibilities of the Andalusian city to win the victory due to the usefulness of its theme, the joint work developed. And the capacity to attract visitors to the capital of the Costa del Sol.
Theme for all countries
Málaga maintains that its theme affects all countries, regardless of their level of development. And it raises a reflection on the need to make demographic growth and urban development compatible with the protection of the environment. And the improvement of the life of the residents in the cities.
After the defense of the five candidacies, the vote will proceed. And it is expected that around 2:15 p.m. the winning city will be announced. At a press conference organized by the BIE.
In the first ballots, it is necessary to obtain two thirds of the votes for the election. After each one of the votes, the candidacy with the least support is eliminated and gives way to another vote.
If no candidate obtains two thirds of the support, when there are only two applicants left, the one with the most support will win.
Parallel to the presentation in Paris, an event has been organized in Malaga on Calle Alcazabilla, next to the Roman Theater in the city. In which the assembly can be followed live through a large screen and there will be animation.
Between June and September 2027
If Malaga is the winner, the Expo would be held between June 5 and September 5, 2027 in the Buenavista area (Campanillas district) and would receive 7.5 million visits.
The exhibition has been conceived as a platform to show advances in sustainable mobility, solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal and other sources of clean energy.
Unlike the Universal Expositions -such as the one in Seville in 1992-, which are held every 5 years in an area with no surface limit and for six months, the International ones take place for three months on a maximum surface area of 25 hectares and address a specific theme.
The last International Expo held in Spain -renamed Specialized- took place in Zaragoza in 2008 with the motto “Water and sustainable development”. EFE
