Alicante (EFE).- A sea turtle ‘caretta caretta’ has laid 80 eggs this morning on the Marineta Cassiana beach in Dénia (Alicante), of which 14 are already in the incubators of the Fundación Oceanogràfic and 66 have been deposited in a protected beach of La Albufera natural park.
The discovery was made around midnight by an individual, who called the Local Police and the Emergency services, reports the Oceanogràfic Foundation.
After the notice, the Stranding Network, made up of the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition, the University of Valencia and the Oceanogràfic Foundation, has been activated, and the protection of the place has been established together with the Municipal Police .
Checking the state of the animal
Upon reaching the beach, the Fundación Oceanogràfic rescue team carried out a blood test and an ultrasound to check the animal’s health status.
Technical personnel from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and the University of Valencia (UV) also moved to the place, which incorporated a satellite transmitter to monitor the route that it will take in the coming days.
To ensure the development of the eggs, 14 of them are already in the Oceanogràfic Veterinary facilities and have been deposited, as is usual in turtle nest finds, in the center’s incubators with all the guarantees of temperature and environment suitable until hatching.
Part of the nest has been moved to La Albufera
The UV staff have moved the rest of the nest to a beach in a protected area of the Albufera Natural Park so that the process does not suffer any alteration or the contact of curious people or accidental walkers.
This is the first recorded spawning of 2023 on the coasts of the Valencian Community, after the attempted spawning of another sea turtle noted last Friday morning in Orihuela (Alicante).
This nesting is the tenth documented in the Valencian Community and, once again, citizen collaboration has been a fundamental part in the protection of these animals, they add from the foundation.
