Oviedo, June 17 (EFE).- The mayor of Oviedo, Alfredo Canteli, begins his second term as head of the Oviedo City Council today with his hand outstretched to the opposition in the search for consensus despite the fact that he will govern with an absolute majority, something that the PP had not been able to win in the Asturian capital for 16 years.
Canteli has warned that with this position there will be “greater stability”, but that this will not prevent him from seeking agreements with all the members of the corporation to solve the pending issues and the great challenges of the capital in terms of urban planning or employment. .
The mayor has also promised to complete the works that are underway or in the process of being awarded for more than 60 million euros and to “consolidate Oviedo as the great engine of development in Asturias and as a benchmark for northern Spain.”
Canteli has been re-elected with the support of the 14 councilors that the PP obtained in the municipal elections, in a corporation made up of 27 councilors in which the PSOE remains the main opposition party, with 7 representatives, one less than the that it had, and in which it will not be Ciudadanos, a formation that governed together with the PP for the last four years.
During the constitution plenary session of the Oviedo City Council, the three IU mayors, who return to the corporation after four years absent with Gaspar Llamazares as leader, decided to abstain, while the Socialists voted for their own candidate, as did the two from Vox .
Llamazares justified the abstention of IU in that “the time of polarization has passed” to make way for “dialogue and negotiation” in order to reach agreements on fundamental issues for the municipality.
The municipal plenary session was made up today of four municipal groups, one less than it had up to now, since in addition to Ciudadanos, which has lost its five councilors, Somos Oviedo, the local brand of Podemos, has been left out of the corporation by lose their three councillors.
However, two of the Ciudadanos councilors continue in the current corporation under the acronym of the PP: Nacho Cuesta (Urbanism), who for the last four years has served as the mayor’s right hand, and Lourdes García (Education).
