Valladolid (EFE).- One in two nursing professionals in Castilla y León, where there are some 7,000 members, would leave the profession if they could afford it and there are no changes in their current situation of increased work pressure and stress , which has brought 80 percent of them to the brink of having health problems.
These are two of the conclusions of the survey carried out by the Council of Nursing Colleges of Castilla y León in September 2022, in which 1,336 nurses have participated, to find out the effects of the pandemic on this group, which will be repeated this year to see the evolution and that they will analyze with the Ministry of Health in its entirety.
The survey was presented this Tuesday at a press conference by the president of the Castilla y León College of Nursing, Enrique Ruiz, and the coordinator of the report and president of the Palencia College of Nursing, Carmen Bárcena.
A pressure greater than considerable as acceptable
These toilets, as can be seen from the survey, “feel a pressure greater than what could be considered acceptable”, and it occurs “in all areas”, especially in specialized and socio-sanitary care, and in all age groups, both in those who have just entered and in those who have been there for more years, Ruiz explained.
Behind this situation is the lack of nursing professionals in the Community, numbering between 4,000 and 6,000, although better management of resources, since there may be areas where there are surpluses and others where they are lacking, could improve the profession, explained Bárcena.
The National General Nursing Council detailed last September that Castilla y León has 17,066 nurses, representing 718 per 100,000 inhabitants, above the national average of 625, although 2,591 professionals are needed to reach the EU average of 827.
Castilla y León is the fourth community with the best ratio, but with great contrasts, since Soria exceeds the European average, while Segovia does not reach the national average.
Little support from their superiors in the face of problems
The survey of the College of Nursing of Castilla y León also shows that the respondents feel little support from their superiors in the face of the difficulties that arise in their service, limitation in the development of their skills, lack of participation in the management of their services and centers and very bad management of human resources.
75 percent of those surveyed define the situation as high daily pressure, 80 percent state that stress is increasing in their workplace, more than half do not feel supported by their superiors in the face of difficulties; with 54 percent feeling satisfied with their work, up to 62 percent in the case of Primary Care.
Alert to serious discomfort
“The data obtained indicates the need to establish an alert due to the serious discomfort detected among the members of Nursing in Castilla y León, since more than half would be willing to leave the profession if the current situation did not improve. . This decision to abandon increases in Specialized Care and also in Socio-sanitary ”, the survey collects.
Flight of nurses to other countries and communities and between provinces
In addition, from the College there has been an impact on the departure of nurses to other communities or countries for the best salaries or working conditions, also with the transfer of professionals between the provinces of the Community simply because somewhat longer contracts are offered in one place. .
Along these lines, the loyalty plan for nursing that concludes their residency in the Community has been considered insufficient and they have warned that a good number of nursing students who are studying in Castilla y León are from other communities, which is why they end up returning their places of origin.
