Madrid (EFE).- The retired commissioner José Manuel Villarejo returns to Congress for the third time to inaugurate the new Kitchen investigation commission, which intends to investigate again about the alleged vigilante plot of the PP government to spy on former PP treasurer Luis Bárcenas and to damage the image of Catalan politicians.
It will be the third parliamentary commission on the activities of the police and Interior leadership when former minister Jorge Fernández Díaz was in charge, who is precisely facing, together with his number two, Francisco Martínez, a request from the 15-year-old Prosecutor’s Office imprisonment at the National Court.
After the one held in 2017 that determined that the police were used politically to persecute political adversaries, mainly Catalans, and the one in 2021, focused on the Kitchen operation, which ruled that the leadership of the PP ordered the alleged espionage of Bárcenas, the new commission returns this Wednesday on both topics.
Parliamentary sources consulted by EFE admit that expectations are notably lower than in the previous ones, that the commission has lost steam and media interest. “This started off badly and it doesn’t look like it’s going to improve,” comments a deputy who regrets that the political groups have not been able to agree on a list of appearing parties.
Finally, and so that the commission does not decline, the groups decided to start with the PNV list that had requested the presence of Villajero and the former president of the Private Bank of Andorra (BPA) Higini Cierco, who finally will not attend this Wednesday and will be summoned again after the 28M elections, since after this first session, the appearances will be postponed to June.
Before Villarejo’s appearance, scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., the deputies are summoned to debate a new list behind closed doors.
