Toronto (Canada) (EFE).- Canada and Latvia will jointly train Ukrainian soldiers starting May 15, according to an announcement by Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand.
Anand explained during a press conference in Ottawa with his Latvian counterpart, Inara Murniece, that the training of young Ukrainian officers will take place on Latvian soil.
“The training will train young Ukrainian officers in battle responsibilities, the planning process, maneuver coordination, intelligence reconnaissance, planning and execution,” Anand said.
Canada is already involved in training Ukrainian soldiers in the United Kingdom and Poland. It started assisting the Ukrainian armed forces in 2015 by sending 200 military advisers.
This Wednesday’s announcement coincides with the end of a cyber defense operation in Latvia involving members of the Canadian and United States armed forces specialized in fighting cyber attacks.
In the three-month operation, members of the Canadian and US military assisted Latvia’s Information Security Incident Response Institution (CERT.LV) in defending critical infrastructure in the country.
