Logroño, (EFE).- A monolith in memory of the victims of the Civil War placed in the Riojan municipality of Ábalos has dawned this Tuesday with fascist graffiti and its shattered plaque, the mayor of the town, Vicente Urquía, has informed EFE.
It is a stone monument with a plaque, which the City Council of this town of 260 inhabitants raised in May 2022 to remember the 27 people of the municipality who died during the repressions of the Civil War, Urquía has detailed.
The plaque, which has been torn off and taken from the stone monument, contained the phrase “The People of Ábalos, in memory and homage to the victims reprisalized for their ideas (1936-1939). May 2022”.
On the other hand, the monolith has appeared painted with the colors of the Spanish flag and the acronym AE, which Urquía interprets may be due to “Spanish Alternative, which is a neo-Nazi group, or something similar”, and the year 1936, alluding to the Spanish Civil War.
The mayor of Ábalos has stressed that, early this Tuesday, the City Council has brought these facts to the attention of the Civil Guard, to which it has sent the graphic documentation of the damage, so that it “be attentive” in case it could Something similar has happened or may happen in some other municipality in La Rioja or in the surrounding area.
He has also reported that the Ábalos City Council will repair the monolith with a new plaque “as soon as possible” because “we are not going to allow uncivil and intolerant attitudes to set the tone for civility and democratic respect” in this town, Urquía stressed. EFE
