Seville (EFE).- The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has called on the Junta de Andalucía to “reflect and rectify” and to abandon “arrogant positions” that could be “lethal” for the future of Doñana, a ” treasure of the biodiversity of Spain, Europe and the world”.
Sánchez made these statements moments before his visit to the area near the Doñana Biological Reserve, which deals with study and research in the national park, amid the controversy over the irrigation expansion plan approved by the PP and Vox.
The president recalled the “serious” situation that the park is going through due to the climate emergency that affects the entire country in the form of drought or an increase in temperatures inappropriate for this time of year, as well as in the form of fires outside season.
In this context, he has pointed out the “resounding and emphatic” position that emerges from the letter sent this morning by the European Commission regarding the bill being processed by the Parliament of Andalusia, since the measure “contravenes European legislation”, Sanchez has asserted.
What is not acceptable – he has specified – is that this “attempt to run over” the Popular Party with Vox has as a final result a fine to be paid by all Spanish citizens, for contravening European rulings.
It is the responsibility of all public administrations and especially those who have the main powers, in this case the Junta de Andalucía, “to preserve a treasure such as the Doñana National Park”, an enclave that has accumulated more than 12 million tourists since its opening. , has remembered.
The President of the Government has asserted that what Doñana will save is a public commitment to its restoration and recovery, listening to science, but above all complying with the rulings of the European courts and the warnings of the European Commission.
In his opinion, “there is no reason” that legitimizes a government with a 4-year mandate to put a century-old heritage like Doñana at a point of no return and has emphasized the “unaffordable” cost in environmental and biodiversity, that this measure can have.
Sánchez, on his Twitter account, insists: “Doñana is a natural treasure that belongs to all of us. The denial of the extreme right and the arrogance of the PP are lethal for its future”.
This debate that is taking place in the Parliament of Andalusia and that is clearly already a national and European political debate can “help us change the mentality of the people and be aware of the seriousness of the climate emergency” that is being experienced, has finished Sanchez.
