Khartoum (EFE) .- At least 56 civilians have died and hundreds have been injured as a result of the armed clashes that began yesterday between the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (FAR) and the Sudanese Army
As reported today by the Central Committee of Doctors of Sudan on its Facebook page, in addition to the 56 civilian deaths, there are a total of 595 wounded, including soldiers, of whom “dozens” are in critical condition.
In addition, the association has warned that these figures can rise considerably, as there are victims affected in isolated regions of Sudan to which the Doctors Committee has no access, as is the case in the conflictive state of Darfur, in the west of the country.
mutual accusations
The defining point of the conflict between the rival military after weeks of tension was recorded yesterday when the FAR accused the Sudanese Army of launching an action against one of its bases in Khartoum that the Armed Forces justified in response to an attack that the FAR had carried out. carried out previously in Khartoum.
The result of these mutual accusations has been a battle by land and air, since the Army has sent its fighters to bomb positions of the paramilitary forces.
These clashes come just two days after the Army warned that the country is going through a “dangerous situation” that could lead to armed conflict, after FAR units “mobilized” in the Sudanese capital and other cities. without the consent or coordination of the Armed Forces.
It so happens that this escalation of violence has occurred in the midst of negotiations to reach a definitive political agreement that will put an end to the 2021 coup and lead Sudan to a democratic transition, a pact whose signing has been postponed twice this month of April precisely because of the tensions and rivalries between the Army and the FAR.
The FAR emerged from the Yanyawid militias, accused of committing crimes against humanity during the Darfur conflict (2003-2008) and are led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias Hemedti, vice president of the Sovereign Council and considered the most powerful man in all of Sudan.
