Chicago (USA), (EFE) rain forced to interrupt the round of Barrika on the ninth hole and to postpone the closing of this round to Saturday.
After moments of fear at Augusta National due to the fall of three trees due to the wind, without consequences for those present, the Masters reported in a statement published minutes before 5:45 p.m. local time that the competition would not resume this Friday.
Koepka, Rahm and the Norwegian Viktor Hovland entered the second day sharing the lead with a seven under par, but only the first was able to complete his lap this Friday.
He did it with a brilliant five under par for a cumulative twelve under par. He sealed three ‘birdies’ and an ‘eagle’ without any error to maintain his firm candidacy for the green jacket.
Rahm, who made history on Thursday by scoring his best round ever at Augusta after starting with a double bogey, had to leave the competition on the ninth hole.
The one from Barrika did not commit any mistake and came from chaining two consecutive ‘birdies’, in the eight and the nine. He is clear that the first six holes are the most problematic and he solved them with par, before accelerating next.
Hovland was suffering more and was one over par on the tenth hole for a cumulative -6 that dropped him to fourth.
The great revelation of this Masters is the amateur Sam Bennett, who is playing a marvelous goal and occupies the third position with a total of eight under par, four strokes from the leader.
He repeated the -4 on Thursday with five ‘birdies’ for a single ‘bogey’, on the fifth hole. That is the only mistake made so far in an already unforgettable tournament for him.
Completely different was the day of the defending champion and world number one Scottie Scheffler, who after Thursday’s -4, delivered a card of 75 strokes, three over par. He will have to come back in the last two days if he wants to have a chance of victory.
Even worse was the day for Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, whose five-over-par run will prevent him from making the cut.
The Chilean Joaquín Niemann continues to play great golf and his three under par this Friday allowed him to place tenth, with a cumulative of -4. His compatriot Mito Pereira signs the pair after two laps.
Mexican Abraham Ancer has a cumulative of one under par and had to leave his round on the twelfth hole because of the rain.
The Spanish Sergio García, champion of the Masters in 2017, was three over par on the fourteenth hole for a total of five over par that, like McIlroy, will prevent him from making the cut.
The closing of the second round and the entire third will be held this Saturday in Augusta.
