San Sebastián (EFE).- Two people of Russian and Ukrainian nationality have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a crime of smuggling defense material destined for Russia. The arrests have been made in the Gipuzkoan towns of Irun and Hondarribia.
Arrested for smuggling defense material
As reported by the Ministry of the Interior, one of the people arrested would be the head of an international business network directed from Spain. This network would be dedicated to the illicit traffic of defense material.
The investigation began in June 2021. The Police learned of the presence in Spain of a couple of Ukrainian nationality who would be directing, from a Spanish company, a supply chain of military aeronautical material. In their actions they evaded the controls established by current legislation and therefore committed a crime of smuggling.
Imminent departure from Europe
The operation was triggered in an attempt to prevent the imminent departure from European territory of a shipment of glass for military aircraft cockpits.
The analysis of the transactions led to the emergence of a framework that had designed a sophisticated customs engineering, at an international level, to carry out operations. They declared that the destination of the goods were countries not subject to embargo. However, their final destination was Russia.

The investigations carried out have triggered the arrest of two people and the consequent house searches, in which physical documentation and computer effects have been intervened, in addition to two high-end vehicles.
The Central Court number five of the National Court has also ordered the entry into prison of one of the arrested.

The investigation remains open. The objective is to accredit other illegal commercial operations of the same nature that have already been carried out, as well as those that are in progress. Also proceed to the full identification, location and arrest of other people involved in these events.
The operation has been carried out jointly by the General Information Commissioner, the Deputy Directorate of Customs Surveillance and the Provincial Information Brigade of San Sebastián, under the direction of the Central Court of Instruction number Five of the National Court and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office .
