Barcelona (EFE).- The PSC will register this Tuesday a proposal to reform the Parliament’s regulations, in order to remove Laura Borràs (JxCat) from the presidency of the Catalan chamber after her recent conviction for corruption.
Borràs was suspended as president of the Catalan chamber last July after opening the oral trial for her legal case and, since then, it is the first vice president of the institution, Alba Vergés (ERC), who exercises the functions of president.
After being sentenced last week by the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia to four and a half years in prison for awarding contracts by hand at the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes, Borràs said that she had no intention of leaving and demanded her reinstatement.
The PSC wants to put an end to this interim and, for this reason, its first secretary and head of the opposition in Catalonia, Salvador Illa, announced yesterday Monday a bill in Parliament to reform the regulations of the chamber and thus be able to relieve Borràs .
Illa stressed that this proposal has “the sole objective of ending the interim in Parliament” and “restore the dignity” of the chamber.
The socialist initiative will establish in which cases and in what way the members of both the Parliamentary Table, including its presidency, and the chamber’s commission tables can be dismissed.
The leader of the PSC asked for “collaboration” from the rest of the parliamentary groups to be able to approve it quickly, before the end of April.
It will be the parliamentary spokesperson for the PSC, Alícia Romero, who registers the proposal in Parliament this Tuesday at 10:00 am and will then attend the media.
