Peña Cabarga (EFE).- The Monument to the Indiano, known as the Pirulí de Peña Cabarga, will have a “vertigo” panoramic viewpoint with Cantabria at its feet, which will be reached by six pedestrian and cycling routes that will make this space expand its dimensions.
The President of Cantabria, Miguel Ángel Revilla, and the Minister of Tourism, Javier López Marcano, presented this Sunday this comprehensive renovation project, which was born with the idea of integrating Peña Cabarga with the Cabárceno Nature Park.
With a budget of almost 4 million euros, the Government hopes that the works can begin this summer and be completed in the spring of 2024.
A network of trails
The counselor explained that the network of pedestrian paths in this environment seeks to recover existing paths. The first of the routes goes from La Concha to Pico Llen itself, opening two branches to places of interest such as the Castil Negro and the Monument to the Indiano and Peña Mora.
The second pedestrian route joins the Rioz neighborhood, in Sobremazas, with Pico Llen and the last one goes from Santiago Cudeyo to the north of the massif and to the top of Peña Cabarga.
The cycling paths will pass through the southern area of Cabarga and are divided into three sections: the first between Lake Acebo and the Heras bike path; a second that is a circuit that leaves from Solares and surrounds Mount Castillo to the Heras bike path and a third section that connects Sobarzo with Lake Acebo, integrating this project with the network of cycling paths in Cantabria through the path Santander-Ontaneda.
A glazed viewpoint
“The stellar performance and the one on which we have placed the most emphasis is the treatment of the land lighthouse that we call the Pirulí,” said López Marcano, who has assured that it will give a new air to this space and will allow “touching the stars ” in Cabarga, since it will be completely glazed.
This is the first time that this area of the Monumento al Indiano ring has opened, where only 15 people can be at the same time, who can access it by elevator or by stairs.
The camera obscura will also be recovered, which will have a new lens that will increase the vision of the human eye, a “perfect” place designed to teach and disseminate geography to schoolchildren and visitors, he pointed out.
Revilla has indicated that, beyond the project to unify Cabárceno and Cabarga with pedestrian and bicycle paths, he dreams of increasing the number of animals in the Nature Park with some native species in the future.
All Cantabria
The president believes that this could be “a total hit” since, as they have recalled, Cabarga has an extension of 2,550 hectares of which 750 are from the Cabárceno Nature Park.
“Here you can show him all of Cantabria and in 10 minutes you can talk to him about what the Pasiegos are like, the port of Santander, and on a clear day the Picos de Europa. All of Cantabria is here”, added the president, who considers that “this is the viewpoint of Cantabria”.
