Cartagena (Murcia) (EFE) old town until arriving, at dawn, at the Plaza de San Ginés.
Thus, thousands of residents have crowded the central square of Cartagena to see the procession, under the march of a muted drum, the two thrones – that of Christ and that of the Virgin of Soledad del Consuelo, which precedes it – and the groups of each of them, with a total of 400 parishioners.
The brotherhood was founded in 1691 by the Duke of Veragua and Captain General of the Galleys of Spain, Pedro Manuel Colón, with statutes approved on February 2 of that same year by the then Bishop of Cartagena, Monsignor Antonio Medina.
The brotherhood was made up of thirty-three noble knights from the city, and its origin is due to the miraculous healing of the duke’s son on March 13, 1689 after praying to the Cristo Moreno in the Cathedral of Santa María la Mayor.
Before the start of the procession, the scapulars were imposed on the new members of the brotherhood.
Holy Week in Cartagena, declared of International Tourist Interest in 2005, will last one more day this year for the commemoration on April 10, Easter Monday, of the 275th anniversary of the first Californio Holy Wednesday.
