Luque (Paraguay) (EFE) The president of the governing body of world soccer, the Italian Gianni Infantino, reported this Thursday.
The candidacy, which was received at the headquarters of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), in Paraguay, will be delivered to the FIFA Council Bureau, which must decide whether to award the organization to the South American country in a maximum of “two to three days” due to the “urgency” situation that the sports body is going through – the World Cup must start on May 20 -, explained Infantino.
“In an urgent situation we must take urgent measures,” Infantino said at a press conference from the Conmebol headquarters, in the Paraguayan town of Luque, where the 76th Ordinary Congress of the governing body of South American football will be held this Friday.
Infantino received the official document of Argentina’s candidacy from the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, who assured that the country -current world champion- “has everything ready to host this World Cup.”
The Italian reported that “other” countries “have expressed their interest” in organizing the U-20 World Cup, although he did not give further details.
Alternatives to Indonesia for the World Cup
FIFA announced on Wednesday that it decided to withdraw from Indonesia the organization of the U-20 World Cup scheduled for this year, after the meeting between Infantino and the president of the Indonesian Federation (PSSI), Erik Thohir.
The representative of the Asian country traveled urgently this week to Doha, where he met with Infantino after FIFA canceled the draw for the World Cup group stage that was to take place this Friday in Indonesia, the country with the most Muslims in the world.
However, the efforts did not bear fruit and FIFA announced the withdrawal of the organization of the tournament, scheduled between May 20 and June 11, without indicating the new venue.
FIFA argued its decision in the context of the controversy that arose as a result of the letter from the governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, who asked for Israel’s veto of the competition on the island.
On March 14, Koster sent a letter to the Government to request that the participation of the Israeli team be vetoed, alleging that “Israel’s policies towards Palestine are incompatible with the policies of the Republic of Indonesia”, a defender of the Palestinian cause. and that it has no diplomatic relationship with Israel.
Israel’s team is one of those that have already qualified for the World Cup, along with that of the host country, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, England, France, Guatemala and Honduras, among others, in the absence of a decision yet. 10 seats.
