Zagreb (EFE).- Croatia has today completed its entry into the Schengen area of free movement in Europe with the inclusion of its airports, after it already joined the land and sea borders on January 1.
As of today, all flights from Croatia to the other 26 countries in the Schengen area, and vice versa, are treated as “internal flights”, so passengers will transit without documentation border controls.
The Ministry of the Interior indicated in a statement that the nine international airports in Croatia begin to apply the new system today, noting that the average proportion of air traffic will be 70% internal flights compared to 30% international, except at the airport from Dubrovnik, where they will be divided equally.
Croatia hopes that with the simplified system the interest of tourists to visit the country will increase significantly.
Croatian airports began the necessary changes in January to enter the Schengen area today.
According to the Hina news agency, the airport of Zagreb, the largest in Croatia, has invested one million euros for technical and infrastructure adaptations to the new system, and that of the Adriatic city of Zadar 2.2 million.
