Mexico City (EFE).- The EFE Agency launched this Friday “Con Check”, its first podcast to verify false messages in Latin America.
The material available on Spotify, among other audio platforms, will confront the disinformation spread in all Spanish-speaking countries, with special attention to Latin America.
“With EFE Verifica we contribute to that public service of trying to untangle this sea of misinformation and noise that often contaminates public debate,” said Ares Biescas, coordinator of EFE Verifica Latin America, during the launch at Casa Creatura in the Mexican capital.
What “With Check” offers
The “Con Check” podcast will explain in each episode which are the most viral falsehoods in Spanish and the reasons why they have been denied.
At the same time, it will encourage listeners to send EFE Verificia the messages they consider suspicious through a WhatsApp channel.
It will have verifications of viral content, in which photos and videos that are shared on social networks will be analyzed, as well as explanations where issues that are generating confusion will be addressed in a simple and clear way.
“Con Check” will have a weekly periodicity and a duration of five minutes, which will facilitate its dissemination on social networks and instant messaging services, such as WhatsApp itself.
“EFE breaks into the world of verification and podcasts at the same time. EFE is the great news agency in Spanish and what we are trying to do is adapt to the new times and offer new formats”, considered Alfonso Fernández, director of EFE Mexico.
EFE’s tool to combat disinformation will also be published on digital platforms specialized in the broadcast of sound content and can be downloaded as a free multimedia product from the agency.
The urgent need for verification
This EFE initiative has the support of the International Verification Network (IFCN) and Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, thanks to an aid program that promotes the fight against disinformation that circulates on the aforementioned platform. of messaging.
To deny, verify and inform, the EFE Verifica Latinoamérica team will use different tools, including artificial intelligence and expert voices on each topic that is addressed, in order to prove that a publication is based on verified facts and data.
“The first thing we do is analyze the false or misleading information that circulates, especially on social networks. We receive many queries on WhatsApp, especially from people who ask us about suspicious videos, photos and audios that are circulating. We pass all of this through a filter and then the most viral information is verified”, commented María Julia Castañeda, one of the voices of “Con Check”.
Although EFE Verifica’s exercise breaks into a podcast for the first time, its work began in 2019, in Spain, and in 2020, in Latin America, in a context in which misinformation is a growing problem.
This effort also guarantees processes adhered to rigorous standards of quality, impartiality and journalistic work.
