Brasilia (EFE).- Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will return to Brazil next Thursday, after a three-month stay in the United States, as announced this Friday by the president of the Liberal Party (PL), Valdemar Costa.
Bolsonaro will return to Brazil on March 30. He will disembark in Brasilia at 07:30 local time (10:30 GMT) ”, the PL pointed out on its social networks, a formation to which the former president joined for the elections last October, which he lost to the progressive Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Senator Ciro Nogueira, one of the closest allies of the far-right leader and former Minister of the Presidency during his administration, confirmed the date of his return, on which the former head of state has changed his mind several times in recent weeks.
“I spoke with our captain today and I already guaranteed him that I will be one of the first Brazilians to be at the airport waiting for his return,” Nogueira said on his social networks.
Bolsonaro in the US and without recognizing Lula’s victory
Bolsonaro, who continues without acknowledging his electoral defeat against Lula, has been in Orlando, in the state of Florida, since December 30.
He traveled two days before the end of his term, thus breaking the tradition of passing the presidential sash to his successor in the Presidency, in this case Lula, his greatest political adversary and who prevented him, with his victory at the polls, from renewing his term. four years old.
On Thursday, Bolsonaro stated in an interview with the Record network that his return to Brazil was “pre-scheduled” for the 30th of this month, and that he would “almost certainly” return that day.
The retired Army captain announced that he will work alongside the PL (right) and that he intends to “walk around Brazil and do politics.”
“We can keep up that flag of conservatism that we have raised over the course of four years,” he said.
A return to Brazil with implications
However, Bolsonaro will also have to face the multiple investigations opened against him. The last two started during his stay in the US.
In one of them, he is being investigated for “inciting” his most radical followers to attempt a coup against Lula on January 8, when thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed the headquarters of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Presidency. in Brasilia.
More recently, the Federal Police, the Treasury and the Court of Accounts opened two proceedings to clarify the alleged irregular entry into the country of a valuable set of jewels that Saudi Arabia gave him in the third year of his term and that should have been declared in customs and included in the national heritage.
In addition, Bolsonaro faces several lawsuits in the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) for serious attacks on the Brazilian voting system that, ultimately, could lead to his political disqualification.
