Santander, (EFE).- The Santander City Council has approved this Monday the aid of 200 euros for each baby born to parents registered in the city or each adoption of a child under 18 years of age.
This aid will have a retroactive effect from January 1 and may be requested once the measure is published in the Official Gazette of Cantabria.
The mayoress, Gema Igual, accompanied by the Councilor for Family, Álvaro Lavín, explained that the aid is part of a birth support program that will go through the Local Government Board.
The program has a budget of 190,000 euros, expandable in case the item does not reach all families.
At the moment, the game is estimated for the birth each year of 950 children or adoptions of parents registered in Santander with at least one year of seniority.
Even so, Gema Igual has insisted that if necessary the aid will be expanded.
The check may be requested retroactively by families that have had children since the first day of this year, from its publication, which is scheduled for this month.
No child will be left without help
“No child that is born will be left without this help,” stressed Igual, who has advanced that this item is expected to be annual and that it responds to the drop in the birth rate in the Cantabrian capital.
He recalled that last year was the first in which the births of parents registered in Santander reached 927 compared to the 1,527 that were born ten years earlier. “This has to motivate and empower us to have children,” he considers.
Gema Igual has defended that the City Council wants to “reward” Santander families that have children because the city’s population is declining.
Valdecilla and Mompía will report
And he has stressed that the hospitals of Valdecilla and Mompía will inform of this aid so that no family is left without receiving it.
The mayoress has elaborated on the need for more children to be born in Santander, to prevent the city’s population from continuing to age and reducing its active population.
“It is the intention of the City Council that there are young people and that the city is dynamic,” says the mayoress.
The entry A check for 200 euros to increase the birth rate in Santander was first published in EFE Noticias.
